Georgian President Expects Investments in Hydro Power System to Mark 5 billion USD in 7-8 Years

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili forecasts the coming seven to eight years will see investment inflows of 5 billion USD to the Georgia's hydro power system.  Saakashvili said at his meeting with students of Free University the investments will finance the construction of cascades and new turbines and creating additional power potential.  Saakashvili said one of the investment projects calls for constructing a 600-megawatt HPP in the village of Nenska, the Svaneti Region.  Nenska cascade will be capable of generating a half volume of Enguri HPP generation and 600 million to 800 million USD will be invested in the project implementation, Saakashvili said.  Saakashvili has focused on the construction of Khudoni HPP and named the year of 2012 as a deadline for the project launch. ‘We will generate 800 to 900 megawatts in addition through drawing 800 million to 1 billion USD investments", Saakashvili said.  The Georgian president also discussed the construction of Namakhvani HPP and added investments of 700 million to 800 million USD will be made in the project implementation. A Turkish-Korean consortium is working on drawing a required amount of investments. Saakashvili expects the construction works to start in 2011.

Europe sees biggest fall in emissions from new cars in 2009

Average CO2 emissions from new cars sold in Europe were down 5% last year – the largest fall ever recorded, according to the European Commission. Road transport accounts for around a fifth of all CO2 emission in Europe, of which cars are responsible for over half. The Commission began tracking average CO2 emissions from new cars sold in the region in 2000 and has set a target of achieving 130 g CO2/km for 65% of lowest emitting cars by 2012. By 2015, this target will apply to all new cars.
