SOCAR President Announces Interest in Acquiring Georgia's Main Gas Pipeline

The ratio of the state oil company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) on Georgia's gas market stands at 75 percent, SOCAR President Rovnag Abdulayev told ABC.az news portal.

"We supply natural gas to not only 30 gas distribution networks of SOCAR in Georgia, but all other consumers too", Abdulayev noted and added the company is interested in acquiring Georgia's main gas pipeline.

SOCAR Georgia Gas has been managing a total of 30 gas distributor networks since December 2008 as part of the Georgia-Azerbaijan agreement.

Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan Oil Pipeline Transported 31.2 million Tons of Oil in January-October

The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) transported 31.2 million tons of Azerbaijani oil in January-October 2010.  The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) noted the BTC pipeline handled 3.21 million tons of oil in October.

In January-October 2010 the BTC pipeline transported 30.5 million tons of oil and 138 million tons of oil since the pipeline launch on September 1, 2006.

In the reporting period the Turkish seaport of Ceyhan handled 30.13 million tons via BTC pipeline and 135.75 million tons since the pipeline launch.

Georgia and Armenia to Increase Electricity Trade Volume

Georgia and Armenia have concluded a memorandum on cooperation in the energy sector. The memorandum was signed in Yerevan on November 24 by Sulkhan Zumburidze, rehabilitating manager of Georgian State Electrosystem (GSE) and a representative of the Armenian energy system operator. The ceremony was attended by first deputy energy minister of Georgia Mariam Valishvili, official representatives of the Georgian and Armenian missions of the US Agency for International Development (USAID), representatives of the Armenian Ministries of Energy and Natural Resources and heads of Armenian power companies.

The memorandum calls for deepening cooperation in the energy sector, namely as part of the Tetra Tech project, which is financed by USAID and the US Energy association.

Under the memorandum, Georgia and Armenia will increase a cooperation potential in the electricity systems, enlarge electricity trade and exports, diversity the supply of domestic clean energy resources and ensure an optimal development of the energy systems.

The parties also agreed to organize the first meeting of a joint workgroup in Tbilisi on March 15-16, 2011.

Energy Ministry to Develop IPO Strategy for GOGC and GSE Shares

The Georgian Energy Ministry plans to develop an IPO strategy for its owned assets.

The Ministry is considering the availability of placing shares of LLC Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation (GOGC) and Georgian State Electrosystem (GSE) at international stock exchanges. First deputy Energy Minister Mariam Valishvili said auditor companies will explore the financial state of the company and develop a strategy, so as the government take a placement decision.

The strategy will be expectedly developed in 1.5 year. The move is to draw additional investments to the energy sector, Valishvili said and added the companies will place per 20 percent of shares at international stock exchanges.

At the same time, Valishvili noted no international stock exchange has been selected yet.

European Commission tells Spain and Italy to take action on building efficiency

The European Commission has formally told Spain and Italy to comply with new rules covering the energy performance of buildings.

The rules require member states to ensure that information about the energy performance of a building is provided when it is sold or rented – in the form of an energy performance certificate – and that reguinspections of boilers and air conditioners are available.

Gamesa to lead development of giant 15 MW offshore wind turbine

Turbine manufacturer Gamesa will lead ten other Spanish companies in the development of a giant 15 MW turbine that could overcome many of the technical and financial hurdles limiting the rollout of offshore wind.

The project, which will be finalised in 2013, will aim to have the technological groundwork to build the 15 MW turbine completed by around 2020.

UK university to unveil ‘Energy House’ in January

The University of Salford is making good progress on its project to build an ‘Energy House’ to test refurbishment technologies, announcing plans to unveil the house in January next year.

The Energy House is a full-size traditional two-up, two-down Coronation Street-style terraced home, which is being constructed inside a laboratory at the University.

The house is being fully fitted as a typical home with working water, gas and electricity supplies.

Built in the same style as the UK’s 4.5 million pre-1920 homes, the Energy House will serve as a test bed for different retrofit energy efficiency technologies.

Europe’s climate change leadership eroded by slow action, says WWF

Europe’s leadership in climate change is being eroded by slow action and a lack of implementation of policy, according to a report out today from WWF International and analysts Ecofys.

The Climate Policy Tracker for the European Union looks at key climate change policies covering energy, building and transport efficiency, and support for renewables across all countries.
